Jun 05, 2009 (newstodate): According to local press reports, Latvia's Riga International Airport will intensify its focus on airfreight.
Krisjanis Peters, Riga Airport CEO, has reportedly said that Riga Airport plans to overtake Estonia's Tallinn Airport in cargo volumes, helped by a 75 percent reduction in airport charges.
According to the latest statistics comprising the first five months of 2009, Riga Airport handled a total of 3,502 tonnes of cargo after an increase by 16.5 percent y-o-y, while Estonia's Tallinn Airport handled a total of 8,309 tonnes after a decrease by 50 percent, y-o-y.
Despite growing steadily in cargo volumes through 2009 in contrast to its competitor, only in April 2009 did Riga with 763 tonnes overtake Tallinn's 704 tonnes due to Tallinn Airport's temporary communication problems with the Russian Customs.
Riga Airport's competition with Tallinn Airport will clearly have the issue of ex-China trans-shipments destined for Russia as its crux.
Whichever airport succeeds in landing the Russian imports will emerge as the largest cargo hub in the Baltic region.
