May 11, 2009 (newstodate): The outlook for Lithuania's aviation services have been brightened by the agreement between Lithuanian authorities, Vilnius Airport and the Swedish carrier Skyways, signed on Sunday, May 10, 2009.
Under the agreement, Skyways will introduce direct flights on the routes between Vilnius and Stockholm, offering 12 rotations per week, between Vilnius and Berlin, three rotations per week, between Vilnius and Amsterdam, ten rotations per week, and between Vilnius and Copenhagen, five rotations per week.
The flight program will take effect from May 18, 2009.
Air services at Vilnius have been hampered by the grounding of the national carrier flyLAL on January 17, 2009, and the number of flights at Vilnius Airport have been down to one-third since then, leaving the country with few connections to EU capitals.
The only relief so far was the introduction of flights by Brussels Airlines from March 30, 2009, offering four weekly services to Brussels.
