May 05, 2009 (newstodate): The construction of a new airport at Brasov, Romania, is still the center of a hefty political discussion in the country's parliament.
To realize the project for a new international airport at Brasov-Ghimbav, the government must decide on transferring land from state ownership to Brasov County, and this has caused a major rift between the political parties.
The political debate has been further heated by the remarks from the country's transport minister that a new airport at Brasov-Ghimbav is probably not needed at all.
Following a tender in 2008, the Canadian company Intelcan Technosystems Inc. will be the majority shareholder of the company, and also manage the Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport, holding 64.3 percent of the shares.
The new airport will have 2,800 m runway and a terminal designed for accommodating one mio passengers in the initial stage.
In the first phase, the construction period will be 24-30 months, and plans were to start construction by mid-April 2009 already.
