May 06, 2009 (newstodate): Ukraine's Chernivtsi International Airport is keen to attract air traffic after last year's start of modernisation works.
The airport's runway will be extended from currently 2,216m to 2,500m, and plans also include the construction of new passenger facilities.
The city has allocated 400,000 USD to the acquisition of new equipment for the airport.
So far the airport has seen only limited traffic and no scheduled services, bur beginning May 28, 2009, the Romanian carrier Carpatair plans to open scheduled traffic with three weekly flights to Chernivtsi from Timisoara, Romania, connecting to the European destinations on Carpatair's route network.
