May 26, 2009 (newstodate): Dan-Invest, a Danish organization investing in agro-industrial projects in regions including Russia and Eastern Europe, expects to start an airlift operation from this autumn of Danish pigs to Russian farms in the Krasnodar and Tambov Regions.
Originally slated for launch by autumn 2007 already, the operation has been delayed first by issues of re-financing in 2008 and then by a process where Dan-Invest has bought-out its Russian partners in the original JV to gain full control of the project and its farms that are already fully equipped to receive its first breeding inhabitants.
-In the first phase we will export some 1,800 pigs from Denmark to our Russian farms, and we will then need to airlift up to 10,000 pigs over the first three years of operation, says Frank Wennerberg, Dan-Invest managing director.
-In addition we will export Danish pigs to other Russian farms as required by the market. Denmark earlier exported about 40,000 pigs per year to Russia, but this volume has decreased as Russian pig farmers have become increasingly capable of supplying the domestic market themselves, says Mr Wennerberg.
The coming airlift operation will be located at Denmark's Billund Airport that is experienced with handling of live animals transports.
