May 27, 2009 (newstodate): Despite a generally weak market, Sweden's Jonkoping Airport reports a rather optimistic picture so far of developments in 2009.
-In 2007, Jonkoping Axamo Airport was selected by Post Sweden Logistics as a new mini-hub, and since May 2007 postal flights are operated through Jonkoping to relieve the pressure on Stockholm Arlanda that is Post Sweden Logistics' main hub, says Herman Larsson, Jonkoping Airport marketing manager.
-Aircraft from Amapola and West Air Sweden operate five weekly night operations between Jonkoping Airport and Gothenburg, Malmoe, Sundsvall, Umeaa and Arlanda, and TNT Sweden established its new regional hub at Jonkoping Axamo Airport from June 2, 2008, operating flights to and from Brussels with connections to Oslo, Billund and Helsinki.
-In both cases volumes are rather stable and little affected by the current economic downturn.
-We are also now seeing effects from the new cooperation between time:matters and Jetpak, with shipments now transported by an Amapola Fokker 50 aircraft instead of by the smaller SAAB 340 freighter earlier used. We expect volumes from this traffic to grow also.
-On the negative side Icelandair Cargo stopped its flights between Reykjavik and Jonkoping from summer 2008, and did not return. The traffic was driven by exports of Icelandic horses to the Scandinavian market, but with a change of forwarder another logistics solution was found.
-Anyway, we are rather confident of our performance in 2009 and will strengthen our efforts further when the airport changes from state to communal ownership around the turn of the year, says Mr Larsson.
