May 12, 2009 (newstodate): The Russian carrier Atlant-Soyuz, owned by the Moscow City Government, is in dire financial straits and may close down by May 15 if the state does not step in with fresh capital.
Compared to last year, the carrier lost 64 percent of its passengers in March, and has been Russia's worst-performing airline for three consecutive months in 2009.
The situation is crucial as Atlant-Soyuz is poised to provide the core element in Rosavia, the new airline conglomerate formed after last year's crisis in Russia's airline industry and the demise of AiRUnion, unitinge up to 11 airlines including Atlant Soyuz, Rossiya, Kavminvodyavia, Orenburg Airlines, Saratov Airlines, Sakhalin Airways, Vladivostok Airlines, Dalavia, KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines and Samara.
