May 08, 2009 (newstodate): Norway's seafood export is booming despite the current world economic crisis.
-Airfreight export volumes of Norwegian salmon are up by some 40 percent, y-o-y, primarily driven by the growing demand in the US market, says Lasse Wangen, DHL Danzas Quality Cargo.
-While our key markets in the Far East remain fairly stable, the strong growth in the US market is caused by the shortfall of salmon exports to the USA from Chile that is hurt by a disease reducing the country's production capacity to some 35 percent of the normal volume.
-Norwegian salmon has earlier boomed in the US markets for short periods, but this is different. Norway is currently investing heavily in the US market, and as it takes some three-to-five years from start to first commercial harvest, demands on investments are high. Norway has decided to enter the US market in full force to secure a strong presence once Chile is back in competition.
-The bulk of the Norway's US-destined salmon exports is transported by ship to Hirtshals, Denmark, and filleted at Danish plants. Shipments are then palletised at Denmark's Billund and Copenhagen airports and trucked from there into continental airports for flights to the USA, or on SAS flights from Copenhagen Airport to the USA, says Mr Wangen.
According to Mr Wangen, Norway now sends 3-4,000 tonnes of salmon by air to the US market each month.
