May 29, 2009 (newstodate): No international bidders showed interest in the tender for privatisation of Bulgaria's Rousse Airport, ending March 17, 2009.
Rousse Airport, a military air force base until decommissioned in 1996, has one 2,500m runway but no traffic, but plans were to modernize and re-activate the airport for domestic, charter, and cargo flights.
That would require a foreign investor to sign a management and investment contract - which did not attract a single bidder.
In 2007 the Bulgarian government decided to privatize four former military air force bases - Rousse, Gorna Oryahovitsa, Plovdiv and Stara Zagora, but so far the program has met little success.
