May 27, 2009 (newstodate): The new Swedish Tor Air, based at Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, is seeing tough competition in the ad-hoc and charter operations market.
In the air since last Christmas with one leased Boeing 737-400, the carrier is now operating on ad-hoc basis for carriers including Cimber Air and Norwegian but has so far not been successful in landing major longer-term contracts with tour operators.
-The market is extremely tough, with strong competition on prices, and while we are keen to remain in the Scandinavian market where prices are comparatively better we will have to move our operation outside Scandinavia if we cannot sustain our operations here, says Torbjorn Winsell, Tor Air CEO.
-But as prices are lower in other markets, and competitors even more abundant and aggressive, a move of operational base would be a most demanding process. We still hope to be able to stay in Scandinavia, but a decision will have to be made within a few months, says Mr Winsell.
