MAY 01, 2009 (newstodate): The end of June, 2009, will mark Lufthansa Cargo's final departure from use of Astana, Kazakhstan, as its transfer hub for freighter flights between Europe and Asia.
The carrier will start moving the first of its 40 weekly freighter operations from Astana to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, from the end of this month, and when the process has been completed Astana will serve only as an alternate airport to Krasnoyarsk under special weather conditions.
Lufthansa Cargo maintains that operational reasons are behind the move of the freighter hub away from Kazakhstan.
It is well known, however, that Russia refused to extend the permit for Lufthansa Cargo to fly through its Siberian airspace, forcing the carrier to relocate its hub operations to Krasnoyarsk instead.
