May 28, 2009 (newstodate): An overview of the Finnish airfreight market in 2009 is little different from that of other Nordic and European markets: decrease in volumes and tough times ahead.
-In our estimate, Finlands export airfreight volumes are down approximately 30-35 percent, compared to last year, and imports are, according to indications from the freight forwarders, down even more than exports, says Jari Aaltonen, Airline Services GSA Managing Director.
-Most air cargo-related businesses have been forced to lay-off staff, and for us 2009 seems likely to become the worst year in terms of year-end result since our start of operations in 1997.
-The huge decline in airfreight does of course reflect heavily on the GSA service providers as they live on commissions on sales from their airline clients, and I would be surprised if all existing GSA companies in the Nordic region would survive as the crisis deepens.
-Mergers would be unavoidable in the current situation. It is rather surprising that we have not seen anything of this yet, says Mr Aaltonen.
