May 27, 2009 (newstodate): Iceland is now preparing to implement IATA's e-freight capability.
The process was launched at a kick-off meeting in mid-May at Reykjavik, Iceland, between IATA's cargo service manager Nordic & Baltic and members of the country's air cargo community, led by Icelandair representatives.
-We are now to set up an e-freight working group and a steering committee, but as we are now getting close to the seasonal vacation period the process will gain momentum only by autumn, says Bertel Olafsson, Icelandair Cargo Manager Cargo Systems, who will lead the process at this stage.
-The target will be to launch e-freight in Iceland before the end of this year, and we will probably designate one or two trade lanes in the first place. No decision has yet been made on this, but we may chose one or two routes between Iceland and either Denmark or Norway to benefit from the experience with e-freight in these markets. After that, e-freight will be rolled out on an increasing scale, says Mr Olafsson.
