May 11, 2009 (newstodate): Compared to the volumes carried on its freighter fleet, Aeroflot-Cargo performed better with loads on Aeroflot's passenger aircraft.
Aeroflot-Cargo, that is responsible for selling the belly capacity on the mother airline's passenger flights, lifted 4,273 tonnes on Aeroflot passenger flights in January 2009, down 22.6 percent y-o-y, 4,756 tonnes in February, down 25.3 percent, and 6,071 tons, down 16.1 percent in March 2009.
In total Aeroflot-Cargo thus handled a total of 15,100 tonnes of cargo on Aeroflot aircraft in Q1, 2009, 22 percent less than in the booming 2008.
Counting Aeroflot-Cargo freighter volumes and cargo in Aeroflot belly-holds, the company thus handled a total of 21,582 tonnes of cargo in Q1, 2009, corresponding to a decline by 35.1 percent, y-o-y.
In addition to a generally weakening market, the comparative decline in the volumes on freighter flights was also driven by the fact that in in 2008 Aeroflot-Cargo operated four DC-10-40F and two Boeing-737F, while capacity in 2009 is so far only three MD-11F.
