APR 27, 2009 (newstodate): Macedonian carrier MAT has reportedly been grounded.
The carrier operates a single aircraft only, a Boeing 737-500 that is now parked at Skopje Airport.
A rift has evolved between the country's CAA and the airline over an issue with repair or exchange of the aircraft's nose landing gear, and as the carrier did not meet a state deadline for action, the aircraft has been revoked from operational use till further notice.
In the meantime, talks are progressing between the Serb carrier JAT and MAT, and an acquisition of MAT or a merger between the two airlines may soon be announced, sources claim.
On 20 March 2009 JAT announced its intentions of taking over a majority of shares in MAT.
