Apr 16, 2009 (newstodate): Latvia is soon to open a tender to attract investors to constrcut a new international airport at Daugavpils, the second largest city in Latvia located some 230 km south-east of the capital, Riga.
The projected airport is to serve also as an alternate airport to Riga International Airport that is currently supported by airports in Estonia or Lithuania as a back-up under adverse conditions.
The new airport will be built at the site of a former Soviet AFB, and the project will be managed by a company set up by the Daugavpils city government that has taken over the premises.
In the plans is the construction of a 2,500m runway, as well as facilities to handle both passengers and air cargo.
The projected new airport is slated for launch of operations from 2013.
