APR 29, 2009 (newstodate): Iceland's airfreight business is on the rise again after the downturn in 2008.
-We are seeing imports rising fast, mainly driven by imported consumer goods primarily from Europe, rather than the USA due to the volatility of the Icelandic currency, says Sigurgeir Mar Halldorsson, Icelandair Cargo sales manager imports.
-The trend is for smaller shipments as importers hesitate to import larger quantities and rather import goods driven by customer orders. Thus many importers that used to select seafreight only now turn up as airfreight customers.
-Cargo export is booming as well, exceeding last year in Q1 as for revenue, if not in volumes. The main export commodity remains Icelandic seafood to the European markets, says Mr Halldorsson.
