Apr 20, 2009 (newstodate): The Danish carrier and capacity provider DAT is cautiously optimistic about full-year prospects for 2009.
-As was the case for any other airline, this year's Q1 was certainly very negative and we did not achieve our targets at all, says Ole Christiansen, DAT VP sales.
-The start of Q2 does however look a great deal more promising, and if we have not reached rock-bottom in the current crisis, we have at least reached a platform. If we can keep the pace, my estimate is that DAT can still manage to make 2009 a fairly good year.
One of the latest developments at DAT that bodes well for 2009 is growing success with the carrier's MD-87 aircraft that entered operations from the start of this year.
-After an initial period with limited ad-hoc operations only, the aircraft is now flying its full planned volume at a rate that is commercially viable, says Mr Christiansen.
-Two factors are behind this development. First, most major airlines have grounded aircraft and released aircraft crews. Second, starting from this month tour operators are now launching their programs and need confirmed aircraft capacity on a longer-term basis.
-So after a period with ad-hoc operations only we are now operating the MD-87 on longer contracts and at fair rates, and this will spur our plans to build up more jet aircraft capacity at DAT, says Mr Christiansen
