Apr 20, 2009 (newstodate): The Russian carrier Aeroflot may not be selected to pass the first stage of the tender for privatisation of the Czech airline CSA.
Reports are circulating that the sale to Aeroflot of 91.5 percent of the shares in CSA would endanger the carrier's independence from Russian capital and go against national interests.
The tender was opened by the end of March, 2009, and other parties known to take part in the tender include KLM-Air France and the Czech investment funds Odien and Unimex.
In the first stage of the tender participants will be shortlisted, and in the second stage, due this summer, successful candidates will negotiate price and conditions with the Czech tender authorities.
A winner will then be announced by September, 2009, according to the current schedule.
The quest for ownership of CSA represents Aeroflot's third consecutive effort to gain the upper hand in Western airline tenders, after aborted attempts to acquire Alitalia and the Serb carrier JAT.
