Mar 04, 2009 (newstodate): The Turkish company TAV has emerged as the winner in the tender for developing Latvia's state-owned Riga Airport.
The next step will now be the establishing of a JV between the airport and TAV that has confirmed that it is ready to start the construction of a new airport terminal and a second runway by the middle of 2010, aiming at completing the first stage June, 2012.
The investments into the construction of the new Riga airport will reach 200250 million euro.
TAV sees prospects for making Riga international a leading transit airport in Northern Europe leaning on its experience from managing more than 10 airport around Europe and cooperating with some 300 airlines, some of which it hopes to attract to set up traffic at the airport.
Pending final negotiations on specific economic conditions with and approval from Latvia's government, Riga International Airport will become TAV's first airport project in the EU.
As part of the tender requirements, TAV will now have to withdraw from participation in the tender for Russia's St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport that is too close to Latvia.
