Mar 06, 2009 (newstodate): Swedish provider SAAB har developed a new system allowing for remotely-controlled ATM services.
With the remotely operated tower concept fewer staff will be needed to provide aerodrome control service, and in addition airports that offer aerodrome flight information service, AFIS, may also be able to offer a more advanced control service.
With the new system, it is possible for one person to handle the traffic around up to three airports, resulting in reduced costs and increased security. This means better conditions for small and medium sized airports with fluctuating traffic loads.
Surveillance by cameras mounted at an airport tower may be projected at a remote airport, providing a real-time oversight over the environment for the ATM straff to control flight operations at a great distance.
