Mar 25, 2009 (newstodate): Serb carrier JAT is again airing its intention to see the opening of scheduled, direct air services between Belgrade, Serbia, and USA.
The carrier's intended take-over of the majority stake in Macedonian carrier MAT will greatly increase the catchment area for the proposed North American service.
So far the plans are hanging in thin air as the US authorities still rates Serbia as a Category 2 country as to adherence of ICAO's air safety regulations.
The Category 2 designation prohibits the launch of new air routes by Serbia between the two countries, and earlier attempts to have Serbia upgraded to Category 1 have failed.
The US FAA rating scheme was last revised on December 18, 2008, so a new country list can be expected before this summer.
