Mar 09, 2009 (newstodate): Serb carrier JAT is to launch a much-needed fleet modernisation, with the first new aircraft to be received in 2010.
JAT will reportedly take in Embraer or Bombardier regional jet aircraft from Q1/2010, and plans are to buy the aircraft rather than go for a leasing agreement.
As a second phase, JAT will replace its current fleet of five ATR-42 aircraft with five larger and more economic ATR-72 aircraft, and finally JAT will acquire up to three Boeing 737-300 aircraft.
JAT currently operates a fleet comprising 12 owned and four leased aircraft.
JAT's fleet of 10 Boeing 737-300 aircraft will be transferred to the Republic of Guinea where Jat has been contracted to set up the country's national carrier, based in Conakry.
After last year's unsuccesful efforts to sell JAT through a public tender attracting no bids, the Serb government has decided to keep its ownership of the airline and draw up a new plan for revitalising the ailing carrier.
