Mar 11, 2009 (newstodate): Defying the current low ebb in Iceland's air cargo industry, a new Icelandic operator is launching freighter flights today.
Cargo Express will start a new freighter service with a Boeing 767F, operated by ABX Air, offering two weekly rotations between New York and Liege through Keflavik, Icland.
-ABX is a US cargo airline that recently started flying between New York JFK and Liege. As there is a need for more capacity out of Iceland on Wednesdays and Sundays and it fits into ABX' long-term plan, we were a perfect mach, says Robert Tomasson, Cargo Express managing director and one of the company's founders.
-The Boeing 767F is capable of moving large shipments by air out of Iceland, but the aircraft is also perfect for moving perishables as temperature can be controlled at 2-4 C. That is very important as we will be moving a lot of freh seafood and other perishables to the markets.
From January, 2009, Icelandair Cargo cut back from five to one weekly service on their route between New York and Iceland, later increasing again to two weekly flights, and reduced its operations between Iceland and Liege by three to eight weekly flights as it lost the contact with TNT.
