Mar 10, 2009 (newstodate): Hungary's Debrecen Airport has big plans for its future as a regional cargo and logistics hub.
In 2010 construction works on 42,000 sq m of cargo terminal and warehouses will be launched by the Hungarian XANGA Investment Group that acquired the shares in the formerly municipality-owned airport in 2008.
The cargo and logistics base will be directly connected to the 2,500 m CAT I runway by a dedicated taxiway facilitating freighter movements without interference from other traffic.
The new cargo facilities will enable Debrecen International Airport to provide 24-hour cargo services with the auunal capability of handling 250,000 tonnes of cargo, with provisions for further expansion.
Debrecen Airport, opened for international traffic in 2001, is located in eastern Hungary, with Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia and Serbia within 50 to 200 km reach.
