Mar 20, 2009 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo is planning for a phased move of transit hub operations to Krasnoyarsk, Russia, from its current hub in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Beginning from the second week in June, 2009, the transfer of operations will start, and the currently 40 weekly operations at Astana will be gradually moved to Krasnoyarsk in a process to be completed by October, 2009.
The flights between Frankfurt and Hong Kong will, however, continue to transit through Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Transiting through Krasnoyarsk rather than Astana will reduce total flying time on the routes by some 15 minutes, translating into fuel savings on an annual base.
Lufthansa Cargo's MD-11F aircraft have successfully tested the operations of Krasnoyarsk where runways now meet ICAO Cat II requirements, and the airport has secured heated hangar facilities for two MD-11F aircraft at a time, while Russian customs procedures have also been streamlined to facilitate smooth handling of the cargo.
