Mar 27, 2009 (newstodate): The Ukrainean capital Kiev's second airport, Kiev Zhulyany is now ready for traffic after extensive modernisation and development.
The airport, officially reopened on March 25, 2009, lies within Kiev city area and was closed through 2008 due to construction projects including an extension of the runway from 1,800 to 2,300 m that will allow operations by Boeing 737 and airbus A320 aircraft.
A new passenger terminal is under construction, the aircraft apron area has been enlarged, and the taxiway infrastructure has been modernised.
Due to Zhulyany Airport's earlier outdated condition, some 70 percent of Ukraine's domestic traffic moved to Borispol Airport, and Zhulyany Airport is now keen to win back a share of this, in addition to attracting a part of the international traffic.
The first international flight from the reopened airport will be performed on March 28 by Carpatair flying to Timisoara, but other airlines are mulling plans for moving traffic from Borispol to Zhulyany.
This will however also depend on the opening of the new passenger terminal as the airport is currently unable to handle more than one flight at a time.
