Mar 12, 2009 (newstodate): Kazkahstan's carrier Air Astana is seeing cargo volumes building up over the last few years.
In 2006 the carrier handled 6,000 tonnes og cargo, growing by 50 percent in 2007 to 9,000 tonnes, and again up by over 60 percent to a total of 14,500 tonnes in 2008, according to the provisional figure for last year.
The increase in cargo volumes is reflecting the opening of new routes and the on-going expansion of the carrier's aircraft fleet.
Air Astana, owned 51 percent by the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and 49 percent by BAE Systems, is now serving a route network including 25 domestic and 21 international destinations operated from its hubs in Almaty, Astana and Atyrau, and operates a fleet comprising two Boeing 767, four Boeing 757, two Airbus A321, seven A320, one A319 and five Fokker 50 aircraft.
Plans are to grow the fleet to 34 aircraft in 2014 and 63 by 2022.

Among the new aircraft to be delivered are six Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
