Mar 30, 2009 (newstodate): Iraqi Airways is now back in Europe again after a long lapse since the enforcement in 1990 of the international embargo imposed after Iraq invaded Kuwait.
The first flight to Europe was destined for Stockholm, Sweden, via Athens, Greece.
According to Iraq's Transport Ministry, plans are to introduce flights from Iraq to Bahrain, Germany, India and Qatar in the near future.
In December, 2008, Iraq signed an agreement with Air France-KLM to open up for commercial flights to EU and to assist in the renovation of Baghdad Airport.
Air France-KLM will take part in the renovation of Baghdad Airport's Terminal 3 to international standards and also support the construction of new airports in Iraq together with French industrial partners.
