Mar 16,m 2009 (newstodate): The launch of Rosavia - the new consolidated Russian airline built on the ruins of the former AiRUnion airline alliance seems to be sliding due to the world economic crisis.
Originally expected to be launched early this year, Rosavia's destiny seems to be in doubts as the Russian state institution Rostekhnologii announced its decision to sell off 50 percent of the stake.
The new airline was to merge up to 11 Russian airlines into one company, but the process would require massive state loans and guarantees to relieve the individual airlines of their crushing debts piles.
Due to the deepening economic crisis that is also hurting Russia, state loans and guarantees may not be easily forthcoming, and this may threaten, or at least significantly dealy the launch of the new airline, sources say.
Among airlines to be merged into Rosavia are Atlant Soyuz, Rossiya, Kavminvodyavia, Orenburg Airlines, Saratov Airlines, Sakhalin Airways, Vladivostok Airlines, Dalavia, KrasAir, Domodedovo Airlines and Samara.
