Mar 20, 2009 (newstodate): Followong in a successful year 2008, Lufthansa Cargo expects little comfort from the business development in 2009.
In January and February, 2009, volumes have declined by 25 percent, and there is little to indicate that March will perform differently.
Lufthansa Cargo now has parked four of its 19 MD-11 freighters pending better times, but as the aircraft will be fully depreciated from 2010 they can at least be operated without any financial costs which will benefit the cost-effectiveness of continued operations of the fleet.
Speaking at Lufthansa Cargo's announcement of its 2008 results, Carsten Spohr, chairman and CEO pointed out that the current crisis in the industry will expect4dly contribute to reduce over-capacity in the market and filter winners from losers in the business.
The financial crises has raised the entry-to-market barriers to potential newcomers while spurring the withdrawal from business of weak competitors.
-2009 will be a year that turns boys into men, Mr Sphr said jokingly in his concluding remarks.
