Feb 9, 2009 (newstodate): The general downturn in the air cargo market is now also taking a heavy toll on Finnair.
In its latest statistics on January, 2009, Finnair Cargo reports a 20.7 percent decline in its total cargo volumes, compared to 2008.
The carrier handled a total of 5,355 tonnes of cargo in January, including 3,880 tonnes of cargo on its Asian routes, down by 23.2 percent, y-o-y.
Except for loads on the North American routes that increased slightly by 0.9 percent to 524 tonnes, volumes on all other scheduled route segments were down in January.
European volumes thus fell 20 percent to 1,457 tonnes, and domestic cargo dropped 25 percent to 223 tonnes.
Cargo on Finnair's leisure traffic was up 262.8 percent to 117 tonnes, while loads on scheduled cargo charter flights were down 47.7 percent to 155 tonnes.
The company's cargo load factor was also down by 11.1 percentage-points to 43.4
