Feb 9, 2009 (newstodate): After failing to attract bids in the recent aborted tender for JAT Airways, the Serbian government will now step in as a last-ditch effort to save the troubled airline.
The government has pledged to inject 10.1 mio euro into the carrier to ease its debts burden and lay plans for a much needed modernisation of its aircraft fleet.
The majority of the loan will be used to support a social program for 600 employees to be laid-off, and the rest will be spent on regaining airworthiness certificates for six aircraft that are currently grounded.
