Feb 12, 2009 (newstodate): SAS Cargo's subsidiary Spirit Air Cargo Handling has decided to close down operations at one of its two cargo terminals at Copenhagen Airport.
-Plans are to consolidate all cargo handling operations at Terminal East, the former Novia terminal, while closing down operations at the current main terminal from June 1, 2009, confirms Mette Vaabengaard, SAS Cargo communications manager.
Behind the decision is the need for cost saving measures in the SAS Group's Core SAS program, and the fact that cargo volumes, notably transfer cargo shipments at Copenhagen Airport have declined drastically over the recent months.
SAS Cargo will also speed up efforts to divest itself of Spirit Air Cargo Handling and the freight forwarding arm, Trust, aiming at completing both sales processes by the second half of this year.
SAS Cargo has already sold its cargo GSA company Cubic Air Cargo with effect from January 1, 2009, and its future role will be restricted to dedicated sale of belly cargo capacity on SAS' passenger aircraft.
