Feb 12, 2009 (newstodate): SAS has now made its final decisions on the shape of its intercontinental route network in its Core SAS cost-saving program.
The focus will be on long-haul routes with a focus on business travellers yielding acceptable revenues, while long-haul routes dominated by low-yield leisure travellers will be axed.
-We can thus confirm that the route from Stockholm to Beijing will will be closed down from May 1, as will the route from Stockholm to Bangkok. The Bangkok-route, operated since 2007, has been on the winter programs only, and will not be activated in the next winter schedule, says Anders Lindstrom, SAS International Head of Media and PR.
-The route from Copenhagen to Delhi has also been introduced as a winter program route only, and will not be activated again in coming winter program. Last flight to Delhi will thus be in March, 2009.
-SAS' long-standing direct non-stop route from Copenhagen to Seattle, operated for 43 years, will also be axed from the end of 2009, with the exact date yet to be announced. In future, SAS traffic from Copenhagen and Stockholm to Seattle and other destinations on the US west coast will be transferred via Chicago with our partners, says Mr Lindstrom.
Routes by SAS from Copenhagen to Beijing and Bangkok will continue, and flights to Dubai during the winter season will be included in the next winter schedule.
Decisions on changes in SAS' European route network will be announced by the end of February.
