Feb 11, 2009 (newstodate): Formerly marked by explosive growth figures, Estonia's airfreight market shrank considerably in January, 2009.
Total cargo volumes through the country's Tallinn Airport dropped 22.2 percent, y-o-y, to 1,787 tonnes due to a strong fall in cargo imports, down 27.1 percent to 1,530 tonnes.
The steep decline in imports reflects the drop in Russian imports from the Far East via Tallinn Airport because of the the current financial and economic crisis and less demand in the Russian market for imported consumer goods.
On the positive side, however, export volumes through the airport were up 52.4 percent, y-o-y, to 181 tonnes.
