Feb 9, 2009 (newstodate): Russia is taking harsh steps to force airlines in compliance with air safety standards.
In 2008 the Russian agency Rosaviatsi revoked the licenses from eight airlines due to lack of compliance with standards, and so far into 2009 a further five airlines have had their licenses to operate passenger or cargo flights revoked.
The airlines are given two months to remedy the shortages observed, and if still not found in full compliance their license will be permanently annulled.
