Feb 18, 2009 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo and Jettainer have launched a project to test the impact of lightweight ULDs on the cargo carrier's environmental performance and transport costs.
The project includes the introduction of 1,000 new ULDs made of composite materials that promise to save up to 15 percent of the weight of traditional aluminium containers, translating into more revenue cargo on each flight.
The lightweight ULDs may also provide benefits in the form of a lower aircraft fuel consumption and less environmental impact.
