Feb 11, 2009 (newstodate): Following on Cargolux' announcement of the setting up of an Italian subsidy, Cargolux Italy, Lufthansa Cargo has now announced its decision to commence freighter activities at Milan Malpensa Airport.
Effective from February 18, 2009, Lufthansa Cargo will operate twice-weekly MD-11F freighter flights from Milan to New York and Chicago.
Lufthansa Cargo took a lead in the Italian airfreight market, Europe's second-largest, in Q4, 2008, and now provides belly capacity on Lufthansa passenger aircraft, cargo capacity on Lufthansa Italia flights within Europe as well as an extensive road services network, in addition to the new freighter services.
Lufthansa Cargo customers can also utilise the capacity on four weekly Boeing 747-400 freighter flights operated with by its Chinese airfreight subsidiary Jade Cargo International to Brescia from Shenzhen and Shanghai.
