Feb 26, 2009 (newstodate): Russia's Atlant-Soyuz Airlines will expand its aircraft fleet to cope with the demands from former AiRUnion-served routes.
The airline will acquire four Tu-154M aircraft on a lease arrangement, and also plans to lease three more B737-300 aircraft.
Atlant-Soyuz Airlines currently operates a fleet comprising two Boeing 737-300,4 Boeing 737-800, three Boeing 757-200, one Boeing 767-200ER, two Ilyushin Il-76MD, six Ilyushin Il-76TD, nine Ilyushin Il-86, one Ilyushin Il-96-300, three Tupolev Tu-154M and one Yakovlev Yak-42 aircraft.
The airline, fully owned by the Moscow City government, will form as the backbone of the new airline, Rossiya set up to absorb most of the bankrupt carriers in the former AiRUnion airline alliance, making Atlant-Soyuz Airlines a strong competitor to Aeroflot.
In 2008 the carrier transported a total of 1.4 mio passengers, but was not among Russia's top-30 airlines as to cargo volumes.
