Feb 12, 2009 (newstodate): Breaking the pattern of general decline in cargo volumes in the Baltic region, Latvia's Riga Airport saw its cargo volumes rising in January, 2009.
The airport handled a total of 613 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase by 19.7 percent, y-o-y.
Totals include 343 tonnes of cargo and 270 tonnes of mail.
Aircraft movements at the airport also increased by 17.2 percent, to 4,540 operations.
Behind the increase in the airport's cargo volumes is Latvian carrier airBaltic's move of traffic from Lithuania to its hub at Riga in the wake of the demise of Lithuania's bankrupt carrier flyLAL shortly after the turn of the year.
airBaltic now operates five to six daily flights between Riga and Vilnius, Lithuania, feeding Lithuanian traffic, indcluding cargo, into its Riga-hub for onward connections.
