Feb 9, 2009 (newstodate): Armenia is determined to attract more air traffic to its airports.
The Armenian civil aviation agency been instructed to launch a feasibility study for construction of a new airport to serve passenger and airfreight transportation.
The proposed new airport will serve as an alternate airport to the capital's Yerevan Zvartnots Airport during adverse weather conditions, replacing the current alternate, Gyumri Shirak Airport that has proved to be unattractive to foreign airlines.
Planning and construction of the proposed new airport has a five-year timeframe, but in the plans is also the establishment of an economic free-zone around Yerevan Zvartnots Airport, aiming at attracting foreign companies and operators.
