Feb 2, 2009 (newstodate): Armenia may decide to build a new international airport to secure a reliable alternative to the capital airport during bad weather conditions.
The capital's Yerevan Zvartnots Airport is seasonally closed due to heavy fog, requiring flights to be transferred to the alternative Gyumri Shirak Airport, located in the Armenian highlands 1,524 meters above sea-level .
Gyumri Shirak Airport operations are, however, not considered sufficiantly secure by many western airline that prefer instead to re-ropute flights to neighbouring Georgia or Turkey.
The Armenian prime minister has therefore called on Civil Aviation General Department to consider options for a new international airport.
To serve the purpose as an alternative airport, Gyumri Shirak Airport was re-opened in November, 2007, after a a major update program to renovate runway and other infrastructure.
