Feb 27, 2009 (newstodate): Latvia's carrier airBaltic is reaping the benefits from the collapse of direct air travel fra neighbouring countries Lithuania and Estonia.
In January, 2009, airBaltic's most popular route in terms of passenger volumes was between Riga in Latvia and Vilnius, Lithuania, used by 12,922 passengers - five times more than January, 2008.
Also in January, passenger volumes on the route between Riga and neighbouring Estonia also increased 2.5 times, to 9,186 passengers.
In Lithuania the collapse of flyLAL has stopped almost all direct flight, and KLM is known to stop flights also from May 4, 2009, on its route to Amsterdam.
In Estonia the national carrier Estonian Air is also battling for its life and has reduced its flight program significantly.
Baltic passengers are thus transiting through Riga for onward connection, driving up airBaltic's volume of transit passengers to 74,324 in January 2009 against 13,149 in 2008.
