Feb 4, 2009 (newstodate): For the first time in many years, Copenhagen Airport recorded negative growth in air cargo volumes in 2008.
The airport handled a total of 347,156 tonnes of cargo and mail, a decrease by 12.2 percent, y-o-y.
Import dropped 7.3 percent to 47.425 tonnes, and exports was down 11.5 percent to 54,251 tonnes.
What hit the hardest was, however, a 13.3 percent decline in the airport transfer cargo volumes, accruing to 245,470 tonnes and constituting 70.7 percent of the total traffic in 2008 against 71.6 percent in 2007.
-We are of course dependent on the same international business conditions as any other airport, but as a strong North European hub we are especially exposed to changes in the cargo transfer segment, says Lars Korup, Copenhagen Airport Cargo Manager.
-When loads on point-to-point direct flights decline due to weakening markets, available capacity increases and this eventually reduces the volumes of transfer cargo through airport hubs, he says.
