Dec 11, 2009 (newstodate): The regional airport at Tartu, Estonia, is continuing its modernization program and plans to open a new passenger terminal before Christmas 2009.
The new terminal will offer enhanced passenger comfort and separation of Schengen/non-Schengen traffic flows.
The regional airport in the southern part of Estonia was long without scheduled traffic, but since July 3, 2009, the Latvian carrier airBaltic has provided 10 weekly flights between Tartu and Riga, Latvia, using Fokker 50 aircraft, followed by Estonian Air from August 24, 2009, with four weekly rotations using SAAB 340 aircraft operated by Estonian Air Regional, a fully-owned subsidiary of Estonian Air.
In 2010 the airport plans to implement new navaid systems, and the terminal will be further expanded to allow for handling of arriving passengers also.
In 2009 the airport's 1,380m runway was extended to 1,799m.
Since 2009 the European Regional Development Fund has been supporting the modernisation of five regional airports in Estonia, including the airports of Kuressaare, Kardla, Tartu, Kihnu and Ruhnu.
The airports are managed and operated by Tallinn Airport Ltd that also manages and operates the capital airport, Tallinn Airport.
