Dec 02, 2009 (newstodate): Latvia's airBaltic is expected to see competition stiffening at its home base, Riga Airport as a new low-cost operator is making its debut in the market.
The Hungarian LCC WIZZ Air is calling a press conference on Thursday, December 03, 2009, to announce plans for launch of operations in Latvia.
No details have so far been confirmed, but introduction of flights by WIZZ Air will certainly have an immediate impact on the Latvian carrier's firm grip on the home market.
WIZZ Air will become the second European LCC to operate at Riga, after Ryanair that started its operations in Latvia on October 31, 2004.
Ryanair currently offers flights to 13 destinations from Riga Airport, with three weekly flights to Oslo, Norway, from March 30, 2010 as the latest addition.
