Dec 15, 2009 (newstodate): -The worst is likely behind us. For 2010, some key statistics are moving in the right direction, says IATA in its latest and as usual robust press release on cargo and aviation trends.
Cargo demand is now expected to grow by 7 percent to 37.7 million tonnes in 2010, stronger than the previously forecast 5 percent in September, following a 13 percent decline in 2009.
Total freight volumes will however remain 10 percent below the 41.8 million tonnes peak recorded in 2007.
Cargo demand is now rising faster than world trade as depleted inventories are rebuilt, but once the inventory cycle completes, growth is expected to fall back in line with world trade.
Cargo yields plummeted by 15 percent in 2009, and are expected to improve by only 0.9 percent in 2010.
