Dec 09, 2009 (newstodate): PLans for conversion of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft to freighters are now maturing.
Involved in the project are the Russian aerospace plant Irkut and the German EADS plant at Dresden, and EASA is currently in the process of certifying the new production lines.
In 2011, conversions will start at the production line in Dresden, and 12 to 18 months later work will start at Irkut, in Ulyanovsk, Russia.
Within two or three years after commissioning of the production lines, production will reach 20 to 30 freighter conversions annually.
Launch customer of the A320/321 P2F program is the Dutch leasing company AerCap ordering conversion of 30 aircraft.
Airbus anticipates about 400 Airbus Single Aisle aircraft to be converted from 2012 to 2026, and the first A320 P2F will be ready in 2011.
