Nov 27, 2009 (newstodate): Russia is determined on building up the foundation for air traffic in Abkhazia, a de-facto independent republic internationally recognized as being an autonomous republic within Georgia, but much disputed between Russia and Georgia.
Russia will now work on an air services agreement with Abkhazia to spur the launch of flights between Russia and Sukhumi, the capital of Abkhazia.
Russia will also assist Abkhazia in seeking recognition by the world's aviation fora, first of all IATA and ICAO.
Earlier in 2009 Abkhazia signed an agreement with Russia for outsourcing of its air traffic management to Russia's transportation authorities.
ICAO has however ruled out its acceptance for commercial flights at Abkhazia's Sukhumi Airport, maintaining that the airspace of Georgia remains a unified entity and it is up to Georgia's civil aviation authorities to issue an application for allowing flights at the airport.
